The Ford Zephyr/Zodiac Mk4 range was very much conceived in the vein of the American Large Car Influence as the director of engineering at the time was a Harley Copp. He had spent many years working with Lincoln & Cadillac so he wanted the Mk4 to be his Big fine British Car. It was to be the last all British Big Ford built. Unfortunately though, the union driven worker ambivalence meant that the build quality was so slack at Dagenham that the car was dubbed “The Flying Pig.”

The car was certainly Big though and innovative too with disc brakes all round and independent suspension on all four corners. From those early years of ownership by professional people the car drifted, like many executive cars, into “sub-prime” ownership and featured in TV programmes like “The Sweeney” as a getaway car. Next step was most likely the banger racing or grass-track circuit. Consequently the cars are now very rare and the big cumbersome beasts haven't ascended to the higher echelons of value currently achieved by the smaller sporting Fords. They do therefore present as a bit of a bargain buy today - if you can find one!

Our example here has spent it's life in Sunny South Africa so is largely free of corrosion. It is likely to need a mechanical overhaul as it allegedly runs but in a very rough manner. It has been resprayed at some point in a rather unlikely pale “peppermint green.” so I would expect the new owner may consider that a new paint job will be in order.

The vehicle comes with a van load of spare parts including a replacement interior so presents an exciting project with no welding or body panels required. Supplied with UK V5.
